So what’s the Old Farmer’s Almanac? According to the one I bought at the local Ace Hardware (also saw them for sale at CVS) this edition is number two hundred and twenty-four. That’s old. It was established in 1792 by Robert B. Thomas and contains New, Useful and Entertaining Matter. For example this quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is on the opening page “Each morning sees some task begin, Each evening sees it close; Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night’s repose.”
I always enjoy having a copy of the current Almanac around. In it you can find weather forcasts for our region of the country for the coming year. There’s a section on Astronomomy as well as one on Astrology. There are calendars like a three year calendar, and a list of “moveable religious holidays” And there’s a calendar that lists information for everyday of the month, including holidays, time of sunrise and sunset, moonrise and set all in Boston, Mass. There is also the tides at Boston. And historical events that occurded on certain days. Elsewhere in the book you can find a list of the best days to fish during the year. You will also find advice on planting your garden based on the phase of the moon. And, by the way, our winter is predicted to be cold and wet.
It tells us on the cover that it is The Original Farmer’s Almanac “Useful with a pleasant degree of humor” I think it’s a great thing to have at your house if for no other reason than the Pleasant degree of humor. Enjoy.
